BALTIMORE, MD. (Wednesday, July 19, 2023) – Today, Mayor Brandon M. Scott proudly presented a Key to the City to Baltimore native, and LSU college basketball star, Angel Reese – recognizing her for her extraordinary achievements and profound impact on the community. As one of Baltimore’s brightest stars, this honor underscores Angel’s achievements on and off the basketball court.

“Beyond Angel’s athletic accomplishments, she has made a significant impact on the community, especially in the lives of young girls,” said Mayor Brandon M. Scott. “As a basketball star at Saint Francis Academy and now at Louisiana State University, Angel continues to serve as a role model, source of inspiration, and embodiment of Baltimore’s spirit and style. She really demonstrates the power of sports to unite, inspire, and effect positive change. By presenting this Key to the City, we’re championing one of our own, who will continue to serve as a positive influence on our city, our young people, and our love of sports.”

The Key to the City is one of the highest honors Baltimore bestows upon an individual, symbolizing the city’s gratitude and recognition of outstanding achievements. Angel Reese has not only exemplified excellence in her athletic prowess but has also made a significant impact in the community through her work, mentorship, and role modeling. Her commitment to constant improvement, excellence in her field, and passion for her sport has already earned her a place among the greats in the basketball world. 

The presentation of the Key to the City is a testament to the countless hours of hard work, sacrifices, and outstanding accomplishments and a token of appreciation from the entire City of Baltimore. With this honor, the City of Baltimore celebrates Angel Reese’s exceptional journey, from her early days of honing her skills at Saint Francis to becoming an All-American MVP. Her success represents the dreams and aspirations of our entire community, inspiring the next generation of athletes to reach for the stars.

Angel Reese is a Randallstown, Maryland native and graduate of St. Francis Academy, where she was a Baltimore Sun All-Metro Player of the Year and won four straight Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland (IAAM) A Conference titles. She began her collegiate career at University of Maryland, before transferring to Louisiana State University. In 2023, Reese led the LSU Tigers to win its first NCAA national championship.

In addition to being presented with A Key to the City, Council President Nick Mosby presented Reese with a proclamation from his office, and Mayor Scott announced that the City Hall dome would be lit in LSU’s purple and gold colors.
