HPU creates Center for Student Success to strengthen academic achievement

BROWNWOOD – July 5, 2023 – Howard Payne University recently announced the creation of the Center for Student Success, a program focused on improving academic outcomes for undergraduate students enrolled at the university. The resources offered by the center will complement existing student-success initiatives to prepare students comprehensively for success upon graduation and entry into the workforce.

The center will be strategically positioned to direct the university’s efforts in areas such as academic advising, tutoring, dual enrollment and accommodations to students with disabilities while, through the newly created University Writing Center, helping students develop their writing skills across all courses.

The Center for Student Success, based in HPU’s Walker Memorial Library, will be led by Dr. Wendy McNeeley, assistant vice president for academic success. Dr. McNeeley’s 29 years of leadership at HPU includes experience as a faculty member and in roles such as director of developmental studies, dean of advising and general education and, since 2017, assistant vice president for university records and dean of general education.

“The Center for Student Success, under Dr. McNeeley’s leadership, will play an essential part in providing necessary support to and improved academic outcomes for our students,” said Dr. Cory Hines, HPU president. “The center is yet another example of HPU’s continued commitment to providing quality, Christ-centered higher education in the Heart of Texas, and I look forward to the vital role the Center for Student Success will play in enhancing the student experience at Howard Payne in the years ahead.”

Dr. McNeeley looks forward to seeing the impact the center will have on students’ learning.

“I am excited about the opportunities that this new center will afford to students and look forward to focusing on student academic success,” said Dr. McNeeley. “We have wonderful students at HPU, and this will be another resource that can assist them to be all God has called them to be.”
